Lakes Regional offers complimentary mental health screenings

Corsicana Daily Sun - 2/9/2017

Feb. 09--The time after the holidays, when it's normally cold, dark and dreary, can be a blue time for many. The days are shorter, it gets dark earlier, and there is the post-holiday let-down that many experience after Christmas and New Year's.

Lakes Regional Community Center will hold Complimentary Adult Mental Health Screenings every Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone 18 and up at its office located at 800 N. Main St., Suite D. No appointment is needed for this confidential adult depression and anxiety mental health assessment -- just walk in. Lakes Regional has marked February as Mental Health Wellness Month, and wants you to know the five signs you should watch for:

--Not feeling like yourself?

--Feeling agitated?

--Are you withdrawn?

--Are you caring for yourself?

--Are you feeling hopeless?

"The main reason we chose February is because lots of people have season affect disorder, and feel depressed in the winter," said Nancy Blum, director at Lakes Regional.

Blum said the beginning of the new year is often a time when people make significant changes in their lifestyles regarding exercise and eating, but emphasizes they should not overlook the mental aspects of health.

"We are looking at the overall health; anxiety, anger issues, what is going on, just to make sure that they're taking care of their mental health," she said.

"People don't realize that how you think and feel about things impacts your ability to get out and achieve the things you want to achieve. Even though more people discuss it in recent years, we see a real influx of people who don't realize why they feel the way they do."

She went on to say that sometimes after the holidays, that little sense of letdown settles in, becomes a case of the blues and doesn't go away. Therefore, it is good to have a time of year when one can check in and get a sort of "check up" much like you would at your primary care physician.

"You just walk in, give basic information, and will get to meet with a licensed counselor, and do a basic screen," Blum said. "You will learn about Lakes Regional and what it offers. It's more like a screening and a checkup."

The months of January, February and March are the toughest, according to Blum, and if there is a need, Lakes wants to support it. This particular screening focuses on those 18 years and up.
